Overview

The Market Town of Abingdon Abingdon-on-Thames, commonly known simply as Abingdon. Historically the county town of Berkshire, since 1974 it has been the seat of the Vale of White Horse district of Oxfordshire. Sitting on a picturesque section of the River Thames, Abingdon is one of several places that claim to be Britain’s oldest continuously occupied town, with people having lived there for at least 6,000 years.

The tranquil river side is the site of the Abbey Grounds with its beautiful and colourful gardens, and Abbey Meadow, which boasts a heated outdoor swimming pool, a children’s water play feature, tennis courts, crazy golf, pitch and putt, and a children’s play area. For golf enthusiasts, there are two 18 hole courses close by to choose from, and for those hooked on fishing, licences are readily available for you to indulge yourself along the river.

 Our exclusive and entirely free SmoothMove service can organise your packing and unpacking, moving your furnishings in and position them where you want them.

Local and Surrounding Areas

Lifestyle at Abingdon The focal point of the town is the old market square, which benefits from an outdoor cafe culture, so you can relax and enjoy your coffee or glass of wine while watching one of the many local events that are held there. The old high street and newly developed shopping precinct benefit from a mixture of local and national shops and restaurants, and there is a large retail park close by.

Abingdon also has an intriguing museum housed in an elegant building with stunning roof top views looking over Abingdon-on- Thames and beyond.

The Whitehorse Leisure Centre offers daily “Health Walks” run by trained volunteers. Designed to suit individual needs and to provide a regular sociable outing, you can choose from a brisk riverside walk, or a leisurely amble. There are many varied walks in and around Abingdon including several to enjoy along the river.

Lifestyle at Abingdon There is an 18 hole golf course 3 miles away at Frilford Heath and another course at Drayton.

There are boat trips offered on the river of varying lengths between Abingdon and Windsor, as well as day hire cruisers and rowing boats. River fishing permits are also available.

The M4 and M40 motorways are close by, making access to other parts of the country easily accessible by car. Frequent local bus services run to the popular high street, old town market, and the shopping centre, as well as to the beautiful city of Oxford.

The minor train stations, Culham and Radley, are both just over 2 miles away, whilst the major stations, Oxford and Didcot Parkway are 8 and 7 miles respectively. There are frequent bus services between Oxford and Abingdon.

Oxford is home to a world famous university, and most of the colleges and university buildings are located in the centre of Oxford, within easy walking distance of each other. Don’t miss the Bodleian Library, which has its own shop, and the nearby Radcliffe Camera, which is not open to the public, but is well worth a view from the outside.
