Renaissance’s plans for retirement apartments in Wokingham gets green light

An opportunity to provide a much needed development for independent retirement living in the area has been given the green light by Wokingham Borough Council. (Wednesday 9 December).

Renaissance Retirement will now re-develop two houses on Wiltshire Road, Wokingham into an architect-designed development of 33 sheltered retirement apartments.

(Please note this is NOT a care home but apartments for independent senior living).

The scheme will provide homes for independent senior living compromising spacious one and two bedroom luxury apartments, an owners’ drawing room, secure basement parking and a guest suite.

The building work will start early in the new year with a grand opening likely to be in summer 2017.

Robert Taylor, managing director of Renaissance Retirement, said: “This is great news – for Renaissance Retirement and the town. We believe we have a fantastic scheme that will make the people of Wokingham proud. We have been working very closely with the officers on this scheme and have designed a scheme that will sit comfortably within a mature landscaped setting.

“There is a fundamental demand for new, independent retirement housing in Wokingham. We have been very well received at the pubic consultation by local people and councillors alike.

“The simple fact is that people are looking increasingly at this form of housing as part of their retirement plans. From the number of people who have requested more information on out site we are confident we have the right product and location.”

Peter Tanner, Planning director at Renaissance Retirement said: “This is not going to be a care home but sheltered accommodation for retirement living. Our research and experience tells us people like to buy modern, well designed apartments with all the latest building enhancements which is also re-enforced by the number of enquiries we have already received.”

Peter added: “The site is perfect for people who live in and around Wokingham. It is located within an easy level walk of Waitrose and town centre shops. It is ideal for retired people looking to downsize and will free up over 30 family sized homes in the area which are much needed in the second hand housing stock. It will also bring investment into the town through local tradesman employed on site.”
